Denmark: The Danish Energy Agency has granted a 30-year electricity production licence to the Thor offshore wind farm, marking a major milestone for what will become Denmark’s largest offshore wind project.

With a total capacity exceeding 1 GW, Thor is expected to supply renewable electricity to around 1 million Danish households when fully operational in 2027.

Pernille Asgaard Haaning, CEO of RWE Renewables Denmark, said: “Receiving the electricity production licence for Thor is a key step in delivering Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm. Once all turbines are operational, Thor will support Denmark’s climate goals and strengthen both national and EU energy security.”

Construction is progressing on schedule. In 2025, the offshore substation and foundations for all 72 wind turbines were installed 22 km off the west coast of Jutland. Turbine installation is planned to begin from the Port of Esbjerg in spring 2026.

Thor is a joint venture between RWE (51 %) and Norges Bank Investment Management (49%), with RWE leading construction and operations for the project’s entire lifecycle.

Once complete, Thor will not only deliver clean power but also contribute to Europe’s renewable energy infrastructure and security, supporting a transition away from fossil fuels.
