UK, England / Wales: National Grid has upgraded three substations with new equipment designed to improve voltage control and strengthen the stability of the transmission network.

Shunt reactors have now been installed and connected at the Cottam, Wylfa and Willington substations. Weighing around 130 t each and measuring more than seven metres in length, the units are intended to support more efficient network operation.

The equipment helps manage voltage by either absorbing or injecting reactive power, improving overall system performance and reliability. It also supports the integration of renewable energy by managing fluctuations caused by variable generation. In addition, better reactive power control reduces strain on key assets such as transformers and cables, helping to extend their operational life.

The National Energy System Operator oversees voltage management and reactive power across the transmission system. Rising levels of renewable generation, along with changing electricity demand, are increasing the need for this type of network support.

At Cottam in Nottinghamshire, the reactor helps maintain voltage stability following the closure of the former power station. In Wylfa, Anglesey, it supports the wider North Wales network and related upgrade works between Dinorwig and Pentir. At Willington in Derbyshire, it is assisting ongoing substation expansion.

All three reactors were brought online between March and May, forming part of National Grid’s wider $41 B (£31 B) investment programme to modernise the transmission system.

Paul Gallagher, Operations Director at National Grid, said the equipment plays an important but often overlooked role in maintaining reliable electricity supplies and supporting future energy demand.
