Romania: Transelectrica is advancing three major investments worth $60.8 M (€51.7 M) under the NRRP’s REPowerEU component to modernise, streamline, and digitise the Power Transmission Grid.

The first project focuses on cutting and optimising electricity use across 29 substations by installing photovoltaic systems and energy storage. It is currently in an accelerated rollout phase. The second targets the upgrade of the SMART subsidiary, responsible for grid maintenance, by introducing clean-tech equipment to improve response times. This initiative is now in its final monitoring and consolidation stage, with all equipment already operational.

The third investment strengthens the resilience of the National Power System and transmission grid against cyber threats through telecom network upgrades and the creation of a data centre. This project is complete and in use.

A key part of the programme is a $34.8 M (€29.6 M) project to install solar panels and storage systems for internal services at 29 substations – around 35 % of Transelectrica’s network. The total installed photovoltaic capacity will reach 11.25 MW, alongside 19.10 MWh of storage.

Work is ongoing at 13 substations, while 16 are in the design stage. Installations have already been completed at six sites. These systems are designed for self-consumption only, ensuring compliance with unbundling rules.

The initiative will cut grid electricity use by 50 %, improve operational reliability, and ensure continuous power for critical internal services. It also enhances system autonomy during failures and supports Romania’s decarbonisation and energy security goals.
