UK, Scotland, Argyll: Two supergrid transformers have been delivered to the Creag Dhubh substation, marking a major milestone in SSEN Transmission’s network upgrade programme in the region.
The units were transported from Poland to Clydebank by sea before completing an approximately 145-km (90-mi) road journey to the substation near Cladich. Their delivery required specialist vehicles, detailed route planning and temporary traffic management.
SSEN Transmission worked with Hitachi Energy, Allelys and Fracht, as well as Transport Scotland, BEAR Scotland, Police Scotland, BT and local authorities, to coordinate the multi-stage operation.
After arriving on site, both transformers were moved into position on specialist platforms during a controlled process lasting several days.
The equipment will form a key part of the new substation, which is being developed to strengthen the electricity network in Argyll and accommodate additional renewable generation.
Project Manager Lee Biddulph said the safe delivery brings the project closer to energisation and will support both regional renewable energy development and wider network security.
The Creag Dhubh project forms part of a broader programme of new and upgraded transmission infrastructure across Argyll and Bute. SSEN Transmission currently plans around $1.3 B (£1.3 B) of investment in projects across the area, with approximately $250 M (£216 m) expected to be awarded to local businesses.
