UK, London: National Grid is preparing for the delivery of two supergrid transformers (SGTs) this August, as part of its efforts to modernise and reinforce London’s electricity infrastructure.
Each transformer weighs approximately 180 t and plays a vital role in stepping down high-voltage electricity so it can be safely distributed to homes and businesses.
The first delivery is scheduled for 10 August, with the SGT travelling 228 km (142 mi) from Willington substation in Derbyshire to Redbridge substation in Woodford Green. Managed by specialist hauliers and escorted by police, the journey will include traffic measures but no planned road closures.
The second delivery, part of the $1.34 B (£1 B) London Power Tunnels (LPT) project, will take place between 15–18 August. The transformer will be transported from Port of Tilbury to New Cross substation, with a planned road closure on Old Kent Road (A2) between Devon Street and Ruby Street from 9 p.m. on Saturday 16 August to 10 p.m. on 18 August. Diversion routes will be in place.
National Grid has coordinated with local authorities and police to minimise disruption and is urging drivers to plan ahead.
“These transformers are essential to strengthening London’s electricity network and supporting future energy demands,” a National Grid spokesperson said, thanking local communities for their patience.
