UK: The UK government has unveiled its first Advanced Nuclear Framework, aiming to kickstart investment in innovative nuclear technologies across the country. The framework provides a clear route to market and recognises the most credible projects, helping them attract private funding and get off the ground.

Next-generation nuclear projects, including advanced, small, and micro modular reactors, could be built faster and at lower cost thanks to factory-based construction. These reactors can supply clean energy to the grid or directly to industrial users, including AI data centres, while supporting thousands of skilled jobs across multiple regions.

The framework will allow developers to submit proposals from March, which will be assessed against criteria such as technology readiness, developer capability, and financing plans. Successful projects could receive in-principle government endorsement, along with potential support including revenue guarantees and risk protections, while encouraging private investment through the National Wealth Fund.

Minister for Nuclear, Patrick Vallance, said: “Advanced nuclear technology could revolutionise how we power industry and propel the AI data centre boom, delivering more clean energy and jobs.”

The initiative builds on the UK’s largest nuclear investment in a generation, including Sizewell C in Suffolk and small modular reactor plans at Wylfa, Hartlepool, and Cottam. The government is also releasing surplus land at sites like Chapelcross, Pioneer Park, and Trawsfynydd for advanced nuclear development.

The framework reinforces the UK’s role in safe, reliable nuclear energy, creating opportunities for skilled employment, economic growth, and decarbonisation. With private sector collaboration and clear regulatory guidance, the government aims to turn ambition into actionable projects that power a new “golden age” of nuclear in Britain.
