USA, Illinois, Northbrook: UL Solutions has launched a certification programme for medium-voltage solid-state transformers, targeting emerging data centre power architectures.
The power-electronic units are designed to convert medium-voltage alternating current from the grid directly to the lower-voltage direct current used by data centre systems. The approach can reduce the number of AC-to-DC conversion stages and simplify power distribution within facilities.
The certification programme is based on UL 2877, the Outline for Investigation for Power Supplies, Medium Voltage. It supports equipment intended for data centres transitioning from conventional 400 V AC systems towards 800 V DC architectures.
Testing addresses electrical and fire risks associated with high-power equipment. Evaluations cover electrical protection, insulation, grounding, enclosures, safety interlocks, wiring and product markings.
UL Solutions said the assessment also examines equipment performance under high temperatures, excessive electrical loads, voltage spikes and short-circuit current conditions.
The programme provides manufacturers with a defined certification route for medium-voltage solid-state power equipment as data centre operators explore more direct power conversion architectures for AI computing systems.
