USA, Washington: Plans have been announced for up to $200 B in South Korean investment in US projects, including nuclear power generation and a large gas-fired power facility in Texas.

South Korea confirmed plans to invest $120 B in eight nuclear reactors and $22.3 B in a gas-fired power project in Encinal, Texas. The Texas project would provide more than 6 GW of generation capacity and is expected to supply electricity to energy-intensive facilities including semiconductor plants and data centres.

The projects form part of a broader $350 B strategic investment package, comprising $150 B for shipbuilding and $200 B for strategic investments.

A proposed $54 B investment in the Alaska LNG project has not yet been finalised. South Korea’s industry ministry said the project would first be reviewed for commercial viability and compliance with legal procedures, with no decision yet made on whether to invest or on the final amount.

The Alaska LNG project would include a 1300-km (807-mi) pipeline capable of transporting approximately 3.9 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day and producing up to 20 million metric tonnes of LNG annually.
