Brazil, Recife: WEG has completed its role in the modernisation of the Bongi Substation in Recife, Brazil, helping strengthen power supply in the metropolitan area around the capital of Pernambuco.
Completed in the second half of 2025, the project increased the substation’s installed transformation capacity from 400 MVA to 900 MVA. The upgrade is expected to improve reliability, operational flexibility and safety across the regional electricity system.
The project formed part of a transmission network reinforcement plan authorised by ANEEL, Brazil’s National Electric Energy Agency. It included the complete modernisation of substation infrastructure, with upgrades to 230 kV and 69 kV busbars, replacement of switching equipment, modernised electrical connections and expanded transformation capacity.
WEG was responsible for the manufacture, supply, assembly and energisation of two 200 MVA 230 / 69 kV transformers and two additional 200 MVA 230 / 69 kV / 13.8 kV transformers.
The company also supplied a range of high-voltage equipment and systems for the project, including current and voltage transformers, 245 kV and 72.5 kV circuit breakers, disconnect switches, surge arresters, a hybrid module for the 69 kV busbar, and protection, control and supervision systems.
WEG also provided assembly supervision, commissioning and energisation services, supporting the completion of the Bongi Substation expansion.
The project is intended to support urban growth, strengthen energy infrastructure and improve the reliability and efficiency of power supply for local communities in the Recife metropolitan region.
