A steel manufacturer has completed the revitalisation of three high-current rectifier transformers, relying on a solution provided by WEG to improve performance and extend the lifespan of critical equipment used in electric furnaces. The units, rated at 37.65 MVA and operating at 104/0.611–0.611 kV, had been in service for four decades before undergoing refurbishment.
Rectifier transformers are essential in steelmaking, converting energy from the grid into direct current for furnace operation. Revamping this type of asset helps reduce downtime, enhance operational efficiency, and ensures the reliable transformation of raw materials in an energy-intensive sector. Refurbishment also reduces environmental impact by avoiding the waste associated with replacing large pieces of equipment that can continue operating for another life cycle.
The revitalisation process included the replacement of all windings, cleaning of the silicon-steel core, and drying of the active part using a Vapor Phase system with temperature control. The tank received blasting and new painting to suit harsh plant environments, and all accessories were replaced. After the upgrade, the transformers were laboratory-tested to verify compliance with current standards before being reinstalled in the customer’s substation.
Compared to full replacement, refurbishment offers a faster and more economical alternative for transformers considered outdated. It preserves useful assets, improves electrical performance, and helps plants maintain safe and reliable operation while managing costs and environmental footprint.
