Vietnam, Hanoi: The GE Vernova Foundation, together with ASSIST Asia and Electric Power University (EPU), has officially opened new Centres of Excellence on Wind Energy at EPU in Hanoi. The ribbon-cutting ceremony marks the start of a training initiative aimed at preparing the next generation of energy professionals.

The centres are supported by the GE Vernova Foundation through its RENEW Skills Development grant programme. Over the past year, the initiative has created industry-aligned courses and established five learning laboratories across Vietnam, helping to launch education and training opportunities for technical careers in the energy sector.

Five labs, including two designated Centres of Excellence, have been developed with educational partners and equipped with modern renewable energy training technology. These facilities will serve as hubs for curriculum development, teacher training and practical learning for students. The programme expects to reach more than 4,000 students and technical workers by 2027.

Kristin Carvell, President of the GE Vernova Foundation and Chief Communications Officer at GE Vernova, said the initiative supports the urgent need to develop the next generation of energy leaders while contributing to the organisation’s global goal of training 30,000 learners by 2030.

Assoc. Prof. Dr Đinh Văn Châu, President of Electric Power University, said the new centre strengthens the university’s ability to deliver industry-focused, practice-based education that supports Vietnam’s energy transition.

Aru David, Regional Director of ASSIST Asia, highlighted the programme’s aim to equip students and technical workers with practical renewable energy skills while supporting a more sustainable and inclusive future.

The RENEW Skills Development Programme, launched in November 2024 with a $750,000 grant, provides training in wind energy project design, operations and maintenance, grid integration and workplace safety.

As Vietnam works towards its 2050 Net Zero goal, skilled technicians will play a key role in building a sustainable energy system. GE Vernova, which employs more than 1,100 people in the country, continues to support the sector through its equipment and solutions, currently helping supply nearly 30% of Vietnam’s electricity.
