UK, England, Witney: Witney’s households and businesses are now benefiting from a $6.7 M (£5 M) investment in local electricity infrastructure. The 18-month project, completed on time and within budget, has upgraded the network to provide more reliable and higher-capacity power just in time for the holiday season.
As part of the work, older transformers reaching the end of their operational life were replaced with larger-capacity models. A new high-voltage switchboard was also installed, and a replacement roof added to protect the equipment from the elements. These upgrades have unlocked an additional 50 MVA of electricity – more than three times the previous capacity – for homes and businesses across the town.
The extra capacity allows residents to adopt low-carbon technologies such as electric vehicles and heat pumps. Households and businesses generating their own renewable power through solar panels and batteries can also export excess energy to the local network, supporting Oxfordshire’s decarbonisation goals.
Delivered by SSEN Distribution’s in-house teams in partnership with Freedom Group, the project also strengthens the local power supply, reducing the risk of outages amid increasingly volatile weather.

Residents are thanked for their patience during the works, which were carried out with minimal disruption, ensuring Witney enjoys a more reliable and sustainable energy supply.
