Germany: Zeppelin Group has taken a new step into the energy infrastructure market with the acquisition of BEFRA Energietechnik GmbH, a German company specialising in transformer substations. The move marks Zeppelin Rental’s entry into the manufacturing and sale of substations, alongside its existing rental services.
BEFRA is based in Leutkirch im Allgäu in south-west Germany and brings almost 25 years of experience in producing, selling and renting mobile transformer substations. Its customers include companies from the construction sector, biogas plants, solar and wind projects, as well as power utilities. The business will now operate within Zeppelin Rental’s Energy, Climate and Water division.
According to Christoph Afheldt, a member of Zeppelin Rental’s management board, rising electricity demand linked to the energy transition is driving the need for more transformer substations. This applies both to electrically powered construction sites and the expansion of renewable energy. He said the acquisition adds around 70 mobile rental transformers to Zeppelin’s fleet and strengthens its know-how in low- and medium-voltage technology.
The deal also reduces reliance on external suppliers, allows Zeppelin Rental to better support existing clients and opens the door to new customer groups.
The Energy, Climate and Water division already offers planning, installation and maintenance of construction site infrastructure, including temporary water supply, power generation, energy trading and temperature control.
Timo Heitkamp, head of the division, said the acquisition supports sustainable growth by easing constraints caused by long delivery times and limited availability. He also welcomed the former BEFRA owners, who join the company with strong technical expertise and industry connections.
Zeppelin Rental employs around 2,500 people across more than 185 locations in several European countries.
