Zimbabwe: ZESA Enterprises (ZENT) has announced plans to significantly increase transformer production, targeting 3,000 units this year compared with just 600 in 2021.
Managing Director Godfrey Mugaviri told ZBC News that locally manufactured transformers have proven more reliable than some imports, with a 25-year warranty and strict quality standards. He highlighted that ZENT not only manufactures but also designs transformers from scratch, with support from skilled graduates from universities and colleges.
The ramp-up in production reflects gradual growth in recent years and, according to Mugaviri, requires a stable supply of raw materials and potential retooling to further improve efficiency. The expansion is also creating more jobs in the sector.
To tackle transformer vandalism, ZENT has introduced the use of aluminium instead of copper in certain designs, as copper remains a major target for theft.
Mugaviri noted that ZENT’s capabilities, combined with government support, position the company to meet local demand and strengthen Zimbabwe’s power infrastructure.
