L2 TCA Master's level lesson #9

Hosted by: Jon Giesecke

This lesson provides an overview of partial discharge (PD) detection and analysis for transformer condition assessment. The presenter shares his extensive experience in PD testing and explains the importance of early detection to prevent transformer failures. He introduces the TP 500 test set, which uses acoustic sensors and a high-frequency current transducer to identify PD. The lesson covers the history of PD detection, real-world case studies, and a live demonstration of the TP 500 in action. Attendees learn about the P to F curve, which illustrates the potential failure and actual failure of transformers. The presenter emphasizes the need for a comprehensive PD maintenance program and highlights the consequences of not having one.

You will learn the method for detection of partial discharge in oil filled power transformers. The PD-TP500A is the test set we will be using for the lesson.  This test set may be used for various other testing throughout the substation including arcing analysis on lighting / surge arresters.  A complete explanation of the testing process including sensor placement and signal analysis will be covered.
